What about soup in a can?

From an early age, I ate Campbell’s Tomato soup. I only knew one taste of tomato soup. Anything outside of the norm was not tomato soup in my mind. Eventually, I had the opportunity to sample other styles of tomato soup. The soup tasted deliciously different and often had a bevy of extra ingredients. However, once again I fell into the “familiarity trap” at home. I ate tomato soup from a can. Is it OK to eat tomato soup from a can? The simple answer is NO! The additives are unhealthy and believe it or not the cost is almost double of a good homemade tomato soup recipe.

Creamy or Chunky?

One decision with any homemade tomato soup recipe is creamy or chunky. Frankly, we love both. This decision comes down to our mood at the time. A great chunky style packed with vegetables and fresh spices can be a meal on its’ own. A big bowl of tomato soup serves as an excellent lunch. A creamy style will compliment any dish or sandwich.

You are Free to Experiment

We are never satisfied with our homemade tomato soup recipe. We tinker all the time. Some ingredients like garlic, onions, and bell peppers are natural additions. Sometimes we spice it up with jalapenos, chili peppers or cumin powder. On more adventurous days, we might try balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard or even pineapple bits. Once you master the basic recipe, the possibilities are endless.

Tomato Soup Toppings

As a young adult, I learned I could make tomato soup taste better by topping it with cheese or crackers. Unfortunately, I would use the cheapest cheese or the saltiest crackers. Can anyone say Cheez-its? We avoid traditional toppings in our kitchen. Learn to enjoy the authentic flavor of a great homemade tomato soup recipe. Watch the how-to video below.
