  • 1/2 green pepper (chopped)
  • 5 cups white pea beans (soaked and cooked)

  • 1 6-ounce can tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

  3. Combine tomato paste, salt, sugar and syrup or molasses and stir into bean mixture.
  4. Bake covered at 350ºF (150ºC) for about 1 hour or until heated throughout. Add water if necessary to give desired consistency. If more color is desired, remove cover from casserole during last 15-20 minutes of baking.

Thoughts About Nutrition

As an imported recipe, we were skeptical about how well it would stack up against some of our “Health Conscious” offerings. Imagine our shock when this Canadian Baked Beans recipe scored an “A-“. Compared to a famous canned brand, it had twice the calcium, iron and vitamin A with an amazing 70% reduction in sodium. Serve me homemade Canadian Baked Beans any day of the week!

Imported Recipe?

Most cooks borrow recipes from other people. Recipe websites like or contain thousands of recipes. Do you know where they get their recipes from? From people just like you and me. Another great source of recipes is PC recipe management software. This simple baked bean recipe was imported from the Master Cook 15 software, who imported the recipe from the Ontario White Bean Producers website, who were then consolidated into the Ontario Bean Growers association. Whew! That is a long journey to bring you this great recipe. See our review of the Master Cook 15 software here.

Canadian Baked Beans Final Thoughts

This recipe is so much better than canned baked beans. We admit, it takes a little extra care and effort to make this side dish. However, time and time again, we see our simple “Cook Fresh, Eat Fresh” recipes produce amazing smiles on the faces of our family, friends, and guests. Occasionally, we even have to politely ask them to leave. We have one simple question. Why don’t these people ever volunteer to wash the dishes?  😀
