Fresh Sloppy Joe Recipe
Kids love to be messy and nothing fulfills that desire better than a fresh Sloppy Joe. Heck, it is right in the title of the recipe. The popularity of Sloppy Joes on the other hand is rooted in their simplicity – Ground Beef and Tomato Sauce. From household kitchens, to summer camp, to school cafeterias, cooks recognize Sloppy Joes as perhaps the fastest way to create a delicious filling meal.
Fresh Sloppy Joes Are Born
As a young adult, my sloppy joe recipe was Hamburger & a can Manwich sauce. To be honest, that would still be my recipe. It is easy, fast and elegant. However, dietary issues forced me to start reading ingredient labels. Here is the ingredient label on a can of Manwich sauce.
Looking at the ingredients, I realized I could replace every ingredient with freshness: Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Onions, Chilis and Garlic. I could replace High Fructose Corn Syrup with healthier alternatives. I could use flavored vinegar instead of plain distilled vinegar. Our Fresh Sloppy Joe recipe was born. No stroke of genius. No kitchen epiphany. No secret ingredients. Just a simple dedication to freshness.
History of the Sloppy Joe
Depending on which story you believe, the so-called Sloppy Joe originated in Sioux City Iowa, Key West Florida or Havana Cuba. New Jersey residents will throw their name into debate. Each story is true and documented. Unfortunately, historians will continue to argue which culinary tale deserves the credit for being the “Birthplace of the Sloppy Joe”. I say why argue? I would much rather be eating sloppy joes than listening to a bunch of historians’ debate.
